The number of Tennesseans with employer-provided health insurance dropped markedly in the past decade, while those who still had coverage ended up paying much more for coverage.

“I’m not seeing a lot of companies dropping their insurance but I am seeing companies change their contribution structure,” said Philip Johnson, a partner with Memphis-based Argyle Benefits Consultants, of companies asking their employees to pay more for their insurance. “When they do that you see a small portion of the people who say, perhaps, that they can’t afford it anymore.”
